As an online business, it’s not very often that we get to meet our lovely customers and community. We love the connections that we get to make through our emails and social media, but sometimes we like to pop on the kettle, prop open the door, and spend some time with the people that shape and support our business.
We recently teamed up with Paper Parade, an independent Edinburgh-based stationary shop, to host an evening of colsie calligraphy in our Edinburgh HQ. We were joined by some lovely ladies for a couple hours of fizz, hot drinks, learning a beautiful new skill.
Our workshop was hosted by Rachael and Cara, the lovely ladies behind Paper Parade. Rachael and Cara opened their first standalone shop in Morningside in Spring 2017, where they occasionally host workshops and sell a beautiful range of greeting cards, gift wrap, phone cases, and other bits and bobs of stationary.
Rachael and Cara have been learning calligraphy themselves for just over two years, using it for their gorgeous wedding stationery projects and across their beautiful range of greeting cards. Lucky for us, they believe in the power of skill sharing and are so eager to pass on what they’ve learned to their community.
The Paper Parade ladies were fantastic teachers, taking plenty of time and patience to introduce us to the basics of modern calligraphy. Cara led the session, teaching us how to hold our tools and how to apply the right amount of pressure as we first practised our different strokes.
We learned the right angle for holding our special nibbed drawing pen, and how to not be too forceful when writing. Once we started getting the hang of things, Cara encouraged us to try writing some of the letters in the modern calligraphy alphabet.
Calligraphy is a really delicate art, and this is definitely one of those cases where practice makes perfect! Luckily, Cara and Rachael sent us home with our own pen, nib and ink so we can continue practising our skills (ideally while wrapped up on the sofa in our favourite blanket with a warm cuppa).
We’d like to extend a special thank you to all the ladies who ventured down to Great Junction Street for a wonderfully colsie evening. We love being based in Leith, in part because it means we’re surrounded by a community of independent, creative businesses and people.
