How to Make a Minimal Christmas Wreath

The challenge of long, dark, winter evenings is what has created our favourite part of Scottish culture: The Art of Colsie.

colsie (kol-zee) / origin: Old Scots for ‘cosy’

  1. The habit of embracing winter darkness and finding comfort and warmth in life’s simple pleasures
  2. The feeling that comes with being present, inviting closeness, and appreciating the things that last
  3. The act of slow living and making time for the people and things that soothe our souls
It's all about taking winter darkness as an opportunity to slow down, reflect and spend time with those you love, cherishing the gift of togetherness. Our favourite way to slow down during the festive season is over a cup of tea, a classic film, or Christmas craft. This week, we tried our hand at Christmas wreath making and loved the process and highly recommend it as a colsie evening Christmas activity. What you need

  • Bits and bobs from nature
  • Scissors
  • Twine
  • Embroidery hoop
Before sitting down to make our wreath, we went on a foraging trip around our corner Edinburgh. This time of year, we found some evergreen branches and holly berries for our natural wreath.

For this minimal Christmas wreath, we used an embroidery hoop
To create a truly scandi look, we tried to cover just enough of the ring to make our wreath look decorative without being overdone.  We divided the branches into two piles so we could have them face towards each other in an oval-like shape. Tying some twine tightly around the bunched branches caused them to take a nice circular shape. We used additional twine to tie down some branches that were straying away from the circle, and to attach some bunches of berries for a small pop of colour. Finally, we cut a long piece of twine and attached it opposite the berries for hanging.

We're pleased with the result! Reflective of nature, minimal, and easy to do at home. A happy pop of colour in our studio.
