I can’t find my family’s Clan Tartan on your website- do you not carry all tartans?

Unfortunately, we can’t make all clan tartan blankets that exist as there is a whole lot out there! Each tartan is completely unique and has to be woven separately, which involves a lot of different yarn colours and loom set up, so we are only able to make a few carefully chosen ones. However we are always adding more to our range, so keep an eye out!

What are your embroidery options?

We offer a script or block text in soft grey thread and can write pretty much anything- even if it includes funky letters! Find out more details and see more examples in this blog post.

What do your blankets feel like?

You can view the IGTV I recorded going through the wool types or come down to our studio/warehouse and feel our wool wall! We've also made this handy chart that describes the feeling of each wool type!

What does recycled wool mean?

Recycled wool is wool which has had a previous life, maybe as a jumper or pair of socks. The products are broken down and the yarn re-spun and re-dyed, ready to be woven again to create our recycled blankets. Sometimes other fibres are added to the recycled wool as the fibres can become short and broken from multiple uses and so this enables the yarn to remain strong and create our very durable blankets! You can read more about that here: About Recycled Wool

Are Recycled blankets soft feeling or are they a bit rough in texture?

Even though we describe them as durable, they’re super soft! They’re also heavy and warm, which is great for the sofa or wrapping up against the Scottish winds!

What are the differences in wool types?

I actually did a little video answering this question as we get asked it all the time. And we've also made this handy chart that compares them with an in-depth explanation. But here’s a sum up:
    • Best all-rounder: Recycled Wool Blanket - its durable, soft, warm and great value!
    • Best for texture: New Wool Blanket - its fluffy, cosy and warm
    • Best for next-to-skin softness: Lambswool Blanket - Super soft, lightweight but still really warm; perfect for little ones too!
    • Best for the ultimate luxury snuggle - Cashmere Blanket - its the warmest, softest, most luxurious material out there, like being wrapped in a warm cloud

Which wool type is the softest?

Cashmere is the softest material EVER! But lambswool is super soft and a little bit more purse friendly!

What is the best way to care for wool?

This varies between each wool type. We have written a detailed blog post on how to wash wool and keep it soft for each wool type!

    Where are your blankets made?

We have spent a long time finding mills around the world which we feel make some of the best wool blankets. And you can see more info here.

Our recycled come from India where there is a lot of landfill wool and other materials which help create these super sustainable blankets!

Our lambswool and cashmere blankets and scarves come from a family run farm in Mongolia, where they have the softest, best quality wool we could find.

Our new wool blankets are made in Eastern Europe using mainly New Zealand wool, which is used to create these fluffier, more textured blankets.

Why aren’t they all made in Scotland?

Scottish wool tends to be quite coarse due to the weather and so is often used in tweeds, carpets and upholstery. Most British mills these days actually use wool from overseas such as New Zealand. After much research and travelling, we felt the best quality of new wool we could find came from Mongolia and the best-recycled wool from India. So we chose to make them at source, working directly with our trusted manufacturing partners.

      Shopping Questions

Why does it take so long for items to come back in stock?

Each blanket and scarf design has to be woven up in batches, and sometimes there is a bit of a backlog at the mills. We also try to sea freight our product in as much as we can as it is the most sustainable transport method! However, we are getting better and better at keeping up with the demand for our key tartans and lifestyle designs so hopefully, the waiting times should get shorter!

I just signed up and placed my first order but I didn’t get my welcome email. How can I fix this?

Takes a minute for it come through. It should be in your inbox, but double check your spam!

If I’ve purchased a blanket as a present, will the person I send it to see anything that says how much I paid?

Nope! All our packing slips don’t have prices on them as we know a lot of our products are bought as gifts, so don’t worry!

If I place an order today, how quickly will I get it?

That really depends on the shipping method you choose, if you need embroidery and how large the order is. For a rush order we can sometimes get an order ready to collect the same day, but usually expect 1-2 working days for processing and a bit more with embroidery! The biggest tip is that there is a shipping calculator at checkout for all the countries we ship to that estimates different prices for different methods, and it’s a big help!

Behind the Scenes TBCo. Team Questions

      What does colsie mean?

Colsie is all about making time for the things that matter! And as a family-run business that was very inspired to start our business so that we could have more time with our family, this is really important to us!

colsie (kol-zee) / origin: Old Scots for ‘cosy’

      1. The habit of embracing winter darkness and finding comfort and warmth in life’s simple pleasures
      2. The feeling that comes with being present, inviting closeness, and appreciating the things that last
      3. The act of slow living and making time for the people and things that soothe our souls

What did you do before you started The Tartan Blanket Co.?

I was a fashion buyer for TKMaxx in London and I LOVED it! Great company, people and fab bargains! You can read a bit more about my and Fergus's past and why we started TBCo. here!

What’s it like balancing family and work life?

Sometimes I feel like we are nailing it, sometimes I feel like everything is falling apart, but for the most part, we make it work by working together as a team. I talked quite a bit about this in a podcast I recorded for Magnificent Mothers if you want to hear all about it!

      What does your husband do?

      I’m not sure?!?!?!?

Only kidding he does all the stuff I don’t have the patience and brain for like logistics, systems management, IT, customer journey management, and wholesale.

How many kids do you have?

We have 3, our 1 year old twins Amabel and Mara and a 3 year old Aila! If you want to know more about us, you can always tag along with me on social @emma_tartanblanketco !

      What’s your favourite gift box?

I love a gift box for a wedding gift and the picnic for two and just married boxes I think are such lovely gifts for any couple! Also, the baby box’s are mine and everyone in the office’s go-to present for new baby arrivals. We have bought sooo many between us all!

What’s your relationship to Kilt Society?

Kilt Society is our brother brand! Its origins are in a highlandwear company my husband, Fergus, started many years ago and is still his passion project. We’ve really loved figuring out how to modernise traditional Scottish design because it has such a strong foundation in terms of quality and material! Both brands are housed under our office name, Eagle & Fox, which often comes up as a question when people choose to collect their order from our warehouse. So now you know where to come if you ever need a stylish kilt or trews!

How can I know when you guys are hiring?

      Keep an eye on eagleandfox.com!
